First Cannon, now Mathis

Just after the news of Joe Cannon leaving the LA Galaxy we now find out that Clint Mathis is on his way out too.  Clint Mathis will spend the rest of the Greek Super League with a team called Ergotelis.  They are currently in last place and could really use a good goal scorer.

Mathis spent the beginning of his profession soccer career with the LA Galaxy over a span of 65 appearances between 1998 and 2000 registering 15 goals in that time.  Mathis also has 12 goals for the US National Team in 46 appearances, including a great world cup goal vs South Korea in 2002.

It has been a while since Mathis has spent more than a single season with any one team and I just don’t understand why.  I would love to have Mathis on my team and really don’t understand why New York was ready to get rid of him so easily.

Good luck in Greece Clint.

Joe Cannon going to San Jose

San Jose has a great goalkeeper coming to play for them next year, Joe Cannon.  The Galaxy accepted allocation money in exchange for one of the best keepers in the league.

At times this past season Joe Cannon was all that kept games close and gave the Galaxy any chance of winning.  Based on the smaller-than-I-would-wish-for number of Galaxy games I got to see this year, Cannon was for sure my Galaxy MVP.

This leaves the Galaxy at the moment with Steve Cronin as the last keeper on the roster (according to MLSnet.com) .  Will Cronin be ready to take over full time first choice keeper position?  Will the Galaxy look to get a starting keeper from someone else?

Maybe it is time Chris Albright makes another position move and goes in goal for a while!

LA Galaxy – Almost SuperLiga Champions

The SuperLiga final was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen this year if not the most exciting.

Pachuca took an early lead on an own goal in the first half.  The Galaxy really pushed for 20 minutes at the start of the second half but couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.  Then Pachuca must have gotten tired of that and they played a masterful game of keep away, occasionally breaking out and attacking the Galaxy goal.  Several time Joe Cannon made some huge saves after the defense looked like a high school girls team the way Pachuca went right past them.  The Galaxy finally pressured more but were unlucky to not tie the game up before the 90 minute mark.

At the 90th minute the score was still 1-0 but at about minute 92 Chris Klein hit a bicycle that anyone would have been proud of to tie the game and force extra time.  Each team had many more chances in the extra time but no goals came of them.

The shootout started off bad with Peter Vagenas being saved by the Pachuca keeper.  Cobi Jones, Chris Klein and Edson Buddle all made the next shots while Joe Cannon made one save and another Pachuca PK hit the crossbar.  This set up Landon Donovan with a single PK to win the very first SuperLiga.  The keeper looked like he knew which way Landon was going to go and made an easy save.  Pachuca scored their next and then Abel Xavier hit one wide.  Game over Pachuca are champions.

Overall I think the Galaxy looked like the better team more of the time and were unfortunate not to score on many occasions in the 2nd half.  The Pachuca keeper was the man of the match for me.

More Non-News About Beckham

It seems anything that can put Beckham’s name in the story becomes news suddenly, and I have proof.

From Yahoo! Sports: Galaxy G Cannon feels road trip is perfect for Beckham

The headline alone should tell you, but go ahead read the whole story if you don’t believe me.

Landon Beats Fire

Kyle Martino would get 2 assists if you could get an assist for drawing a PK.  It took two separate incidents of fouls on Kyle Martino be bring Donovan to the penalty spot both times resulting in goals.  The Fire did not tally a shot on Joe Cannon all night.

This win brings the Galaxy all the way up to… right where they have been for a while now, just above last place Real Salt Lake and still 5 points behind 4th place Colorado.  Now if only they could do this to a team that is not in last place…
