LA Galaxy – Almost SuperLiga Champions

The SuperLiga final was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen this year if not the most exciting.

Pachuca took an early lead on an own goal in the first half.  The Galaxy really pushed for 20 minutes at the start of the second half but couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.  Then Pachuca must have gotten tired of that and they played a masterful game of keep away, occasionally breaking out and attacking the Galaxy goal.  Several time Joe Cannon made some huge saves after the defense looked like a high school girls team the way Pachuca went right past them.  The Galaxy finally pressured more but were unlucky to not tie the game up before the 90 minute mark.

At the 90th minute the score was still 1-0 but at about minute 92 Chris Klein hit a bicycle that anyone would have been proud of to tie the game and force extra time.  Each team had many more chances in the extra time but no goals came of them.

The shootout started off bad with Peter Vagenas being saved by the Pachuca keeper.  Cobi Jones, Chris Klein and Edson Buddle all made the next shots while Joe Cannon made one save and another Pachuca PK hit the crossbar.  This set up Landon Donovan with a single PK to win the very first SuperLiga.  The keeper looked like he knew which way Landon was going to go and made an easy save.  Pachuca scored their next and then Abel Xavier hit one wide.  Game over Pachuca are champions.

Overall I think the Galaxy looked like the better team more of the time and were unfortunate not to score on many occasions in the 2nd half.  The Pachuca keeper was the man of the match for me.

Beckham Sends Galaxy To SuperLiga Final

David Beckham made his first start for the Galaxy in tonight’s SuperLiga semi-final versus DC United.  After 63 minutes, 1 goal and 1 assist he was taken out of the game, but the Galaxy went on to a 2-0 victory.

The good form in SuperLiga continues, what will become of league play.  Just a few days ago the Galaxy lost to the same DC United team in league play.  That was in DC, tonite’s game was at the Home Depot Center.

Will Beckham Play In Tonight’s SuperLiga Semi-final

MLS Cup glory looks like a further long-shot every day, but the Galaxy can still claim the glory of winning the inaugural SuperLiga.  DC United comes to the Home Depot Center tonight to play a SuperLiga semi-final, the winner going on to play Pachuca in the final.

Rumors are flying around that Mr. David Beckham is going to be ready to play in this game tonight.  DC United has been pretty hot recently, but so have the Galaxy when it comes to the SuperLiga, just not so much in league play.

Galaxy Beat Mexican Champions

In the first game of SuperLiga the Galaxy beat Pachuca 2-1.  I wasn’t able to see the game but this is an encouraging victory.   Coach Yallop expected Pachuca to be at least as tough as the Chelsea team the Galaxy lost to on Saturday.

Cobi Jones Saves A Point, Almost Three

Cobi Jones played the part of super-sub quite well on Saturday.  Jones came off the bench for Edson Buddle after the Galaxy gave up 2 quick goal at the start of the 2nd half vs the Kansas City Wizards.

Off the bench Jones scored 2 goals to tie the game and nearly completed a hat trick to give the Galaxy a lead.  The game ended 2-2, making this the first time this year the Galaxy did not follow a win with a loss.

This was Jone’s first 2 goal game in 5 years.  Cobi is retiring after this season.

The Galaxy are not done with regular season MLS games as they prepare for the very first SuperLiga.
