What the hell are the Galaxy doing?

We really need some more Galaxy rumors. Yesterday they were scheduling friendly games on the other side of the world during the MLS playoffs. Today their supposed opponents deny those reports.

Figo will be playing for the Galaxy soon.  No - it was Zidane.  Errrr - wait, it was Ronaldo, or was it Wayne Rooney?

Pele is going to come out of retirement to replace Steve Cronin in goal for the rest of the season.

The Galaxy are going to play half of their home games next season in Montata because they don’t want to be so close to Chivas anymore.

Alexi Lalas is an alien.

What did I miss?

Galaxy plan trip back to Australia

Last year the Galaxy took a trip to Australia and lost a friendly game to Sydney FC. According to a news.com.au article, the Galaxy plan to return to Australia this coming November for another friendly. This time they will meet Queensland Roar in Brisbane. The article says:

Beckham and his LA Galaxy side will play Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium in November as part of the cashed-up American Major Soccer League club’s end-of-season tour.

Now I started to wonder exactly when the season ends. I don’t think many teams are going to want to start playing games the very week after a long season comes to an end. It looks like the regular season ends on Sunday, October 26th. The playoffs will continue up to the MLS Cup which will be played on Sunday, November 23rd.

So I assume if the article is correct, the Galaxy are already planning on either not getting into the playoffs, or at least not getting too far into the playoffs. Sounds like a good plan. But then - who has ever accused the Galaxy of good planning when it comes to their friendly schedules?

Road to the US Open Cup

Qualifying for the US Open Cup will get underway for the Galaxy on May 27th at the Home Depot Center. Due to the poor finish in the league last year the Galaxy have to win their way into the US Open Cup, and it isn’t just a single win, they’ll need two wins.

The qualifying will start on May 27th at home when the Colorado Rapids come to town. The winner of that game must travel to Kansas City to earn their way into the Open Cup.

Last year the Galaxy qualified for the tournament but lost their first game vs USL second division club Richmond Kickers.

Beckham on Sesame Street

David Beckham has recorded an appearance on the children’s TV show Sesame Street accoring to PopCrunch.com. They say that in his appearance he teaches a new word to Elmo.

In a totally different type of show, Big Bird comes to a Galaxy practice and teaches Abel Xavier how to defend against the Chivas USA attack.

Galaxy take lead in 2008 SuperClasico

The Galaxy took a big lead this weekend in the 2008 SuperClasico with a huge 5-2 victory over Chivas USA. Landon Donovan continued his hot scoring streak which now has him on top of the MLS scoring list with 8 goals in 5 games. Donovan is on pace to break the single season scoring title, but of course the season is way too early to start thinking about anything like that.

The game started out back and forth with Chivas answering each of the first 2 Galaxy goals. But then in the last half hour the Galaxy put 3 unanswered goal past Chivas keeper Brad Guzan. Donovan hit a hat trick and Alan Gordon actually got a couple of goals.

This victory takes the Galaxy up to 2nd place in the West witha 2-2-1 (7 pts) record. Overall in the league the Galaxy are tied for 7th/8th position with the New York Red Bulls who are in 6th place in the east. All the points right now are in the east it seems.

First SuperClasico of 2008 Tonight

The first meeting of the year between the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA takes place tonight at the home stadium of both teams - the Home Depot Center. Landon Donovan and David Beckham have been a good duo over the past couple weeks. Chivas USA coach Preki asked “Can’t the league suspend them for this weekend?” in response to being asked how to stop Donovan and Beckham.

Chivas USA vs LA Galaxy

Chivas USA 1-2-1 4pts (10th-T)

LA Galaxy 1-2-1 4pts (10th-T)

7:30 PM (PST) - Fox Soccer Channel

This will be the 14th SuperClasico. The previous matches have seen the Galaxy take 8 victories, Chivas USA have 3 victories and the game has ended in a draw twice. Both teams are off to a slow start this season.

Any predictions?

Is Iran coming to play the Galaxy?

There have been reports that the Iran national team would come to play a friendly with the LA Galaxy this summer.  Some have said that Iran would not come unless they got a formal invitation from US Soccer which they have not yet received.

I read somewhere (can’t find it now) that the Galaxy have denied this friendly game vs. Iran.

I personally think the chances of this rumored game actually happening are very slim.  What do you think, will the Galaxy see Iran on the field anytime this year?

Galaxy acquire Joey Franchino from New England Revolution

Former New England Revolution and former Galaxy player Joey Franchino is coming back to LA.  Franchino made 56 appearances for the Galaxy between 1998 and 2000 before going to New England where he would have a successful career with the Revolution.

The past year saw injury severely limit Franchino’s playing time.  Now he only plays a backup role.  A tough/passionate player like Franchino should help out the defensive midfield area in the Galaxy lineup.

Galaxy lose to Rapids and lose Ruiz

As if the 4-0 loss to another team on the outside of the playoffs last year wasn’t bad enough, they also lost Carlos Ruiz for an undetermined amount of time. Rapids rookie Ciaran O’Brien laid a hard tackle on Ruiz near the end of the game on Saturday which eventually led to O’Brien seeing a red card. Ruiz went down holding his knee in pain. Initially it looked to me like the Ruiz a lot of people don’t like - the guy that is going to play it up until his opponent sees a card or he hears the whistle. But this time he was apparently seriously hurt.

Ruiz was diagnosed with MCL damage, which can be a very serious injury. Now Ruiz is questionable for the Galaxy game vs the San Jose Earthquakes. If he is only questionable it certainly can’t be too bad.
