The first meeting of the year between the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA takes place tonight at the home stadium of both teams - the Home Depot Center. Landon Donovan and David Beckham have been a good duo over the past couple weeks. Chivas USA coach Preki asked “Can’t the league suspend them for this weekend?” in response to being asked how to stop Donovan and Beckham.
vs
Chivas USA 1-2-1 4pts (10th-T)
LA Galaxy 1-2-1 4pts (10th-T)
7:30 PM (PST) - Fox Soccer Channel
This will be the 14th SuperClasico. The previous matches have seen the Galaxy take 8 victories, Chivas USA have 3 victories and the game has ended in a draw twice. Both teams are off to a slow start this season.
Any predictions?

There have been reports that the Iran national team would come to play a friendly with the LA Galaxy this summer. Some have said that Iran would not come unless they got a formal invitation from US Soccer which they have not yet received.
I read somewhere (can’t find it now) that the Galaxy have denied this friendly game vs. Iran.
I personally think the chances of this rumored game actually happening are very slim. What do you think, will the Galaxy see Iran on the field anytime this year?

Former New England Revolution and former Galaxy player Joey Franchino is coming back to LA. Franchino made 56 appearances for the Galaxy between 1998 and 2000 before going to New England where he would have a successful career with the Revolution.
The past year saw injury severely limit Franchino’s playing time. Now he only plays a backup role. A tough/passionate player like Franchino should help out the defensive midfield area in the Galaxy lineup.

As if the 4-0 loss to another team on the outside of the playoffs last year wasn’t bad enough, they also lost Carlos Ruiz for an undetermined amount of time. Rapids rookie Ciaran O’Brien laid a hard tackle on Ruiz near the end of the game on Saturday which eventually led to O’Brien seeing a red card. Ruiz went down holding his knee in pain. Initially it looked to me like the Ruiz a lot of people don’t like - the guy that is going to play it up until his opponent sees a card or he hears the whistle. But this time he was apparently seriously hurt.
Ruiz was diagnosed with MCL damage, which can be a very serious injury. Now Ruiz is questionable for the Galaxy game vs the San Jose Earthquakes. If he is only questionable it certainly can’t be too bad.

Why is Gullit even concerned about AC Milan or Paulo Maldini? Shouldn’t he be more concerned about the upcoming MLS season?
In case you didn’t hear about it, Gullit aparently was recently talking about AC Milan being an old and slow team. Specifically he said that Paulo Maldini couldn’t cut it in MLS. Remember that Gullit played for AC Milan quite a while ago.
Why is he worried about AC Milan and Maldini?
Would you like to have Paulo Maldini playing on the Galaxy defense?

Catch the Galaxy tonight in their first (somewhat) meaningful game when the kick off the Pan-Pacific Championships on ESPN Classic. The Galaxy play Gamba Osaka from the Japanese J-League at 6:00 PM (local time) which will be 8:00 PM on the west coast, 10:00 PM Central. The game will be televised on ESPN Classic.
This Saturday will be the end of the Pan-Pacific Championships with a 3rd place game and championship game. It is a small single elimination tournament. If the Galaxy win tonight they play the winner of Houston Dynamo and Sydney FC.  If the Galaxy lose they will face the loser of that other game for 3rd place.
Get a game preview here on the official Pan-Pacific Championship website. Go Galaxy!

After playing just one season with the Galaxy, 23 year old defender Ty Harden is retiring. Harden claims he just lost his passion for the game and is quitting Major League Soccer in order to work for a charitable organization.
So with the loss of another defender the Galaxy had to do something. Why not bring back another former Galaxy star? They’ve sent Quavas Kirk up to DC United in exchange for former Galaxy defender Greg Vanney.  Vanney played for the Galaxy from the start of MLS until 2001 making 196 appearances in that time while scoring 26 goals.
It is too bad about Harden retiring - but maybe if we are lucky he will change his mind and come back to the Galaxy soon.

The official 2008 LA Galaxy schedule has been release and can be found right here.
This is a copy of the official schedule from MLSNet.com. It does not have some other games that are rumored to be added to the schedule. One such game that has heard a lot of rumors recently is a friendly vs. Greek side AEK Athens to be played in Seattle on May 26th.
As more information becomes available on these extra games that are not on the official schedule yet I’ll add them to the schedule here.

David Beckham’s old coach at Real Madrid is now able to leave him off another team - this time Fabio gets to drop Beckham from the England national team. The reasoning was that he is not quite match fit. Just in case someone out there doesn’t already know - Beckham is looking for his 100th cap with the England national team. Now he will have to wait a little bit longer to see if he will get it.
Capello eventually brought Beckham back to the Real Madrid starting lineup - so maybe he will still get number 100 with England.

More specifically the former Newcastle United and Nigerian international could be coming to the LA Galaxy. Celestine Babayaro is a 29 year old left back that was just released by Newcastle United partially due to injury issues - so he should fit right in with the Galaxy.
Babayaro played earlier in his career at Chelsea after then Chelsae coach, now Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit brought him to Chelsea. Now Ruud brings him to the Galaxy. It is important to Ruud that they not bring in a bunch of old guys, so 29 does not qualify as old yet. If he stays healthy 29 is young enough to give a few real quality years.
